Introduction

Abstract

At the British Birdwatching Fair held at the end of August 2007 and during following events till the end of 2007, Leica Camera and its representatives and dealers introduced the new generation of Leica Ultravid binoculars called HD (« High Definition »).
According to the German company, these new HD Leica include different innovations (200 innovative updates and changes!): fluorite-ion lenses that reduce chromatic aberrations and improve color rendition, lens and prism coatings let 3% more light come through the instrument, the stray light has been reducted, a new designed focusing mechanism incorporates a virtually lubricant-free system with PETP-Discs, which provide for a smooth and positive movement throughout the operating temperature range, a newly developed AquaDura hydrophobic lens coating lets rain and fog roll off exterior lens surfaces and makes it easier to clean the lenses, new designed eyecups for very comfortable positioning
But these innovations come with an increase of the prices, with for example 2000 euros for the 10×42 HD ( 1700 euros for the previous 10×42 BR model).
In this article, we introduce you the new features, we compare the technical specifications between the BR and HD Ultravid models, and we present you a synthesis of the first commentaries and reviews published on the Web.
