Un janvier très doux

Situation des principaux centres ornithologiques en Israël

Janvier en Israël est le mois le plus froid de l'année, et souvent le plus calme d'un point de vue ornithologique. Mais ce mois de janvier 2007 a été très doux, comme en France, et l'activité migratrice semble avoir déjà débuté, comme ont pu le constater les bagueurs du Jerusalem Bird Observatory (JBO).
Toutefois, certains hivernants étaient présents en nombre, avec par exemple plus de 23 000 Milans noirs comptés le 26 janvier dans sept dortoirs répartis dans tout le pays.
Dans le Sud les pipits rares "classiques" (farlousane, à dos olive) ont été repérés dans les champs irrigués de Yotvata, ainsi qu'une espèce remarquable et fantômatique, l'Engoulevent du désert.
Dans la réserve de Gamla (plateau du Golan), 25 aires actives de Vautours fauves (Gyps fulvus) ont été comptées.
Mais toute la communauté ornithologique israélienne pense déjà au premier "Spring Festival" qui se déroule du 18 au 24 mars 2007 à Eilat…

Birding News from Israel : January 2007.
- The rare birds news through the country with the website www.israbirding.com.
- The Israel Ornithological Center, Hula Valley. Thousands of Black Kites (Milvus migrans) , flock after flock of birds, filling the sky in the evening, above the nature reserve at Ein Afek as they gather to roost. The Black Kites congregate to roost at several other sites all over the country, attracting birdwatchers who stand and gasp in amazement and delight! The Bet Shean Valley, in northern Israel, is a wonderful area for birdwatching. The fishponds and the fields of the kibbutzim attract a huge variety of birds all year round...
And each winter, in Netanya, a town on the Mediterranean coast, a large pool of water collects in a marshy area. The Dora Pool is very near apartment buildings, but it is surrounded by trees and attracts a nice variety of birds.
- The Jerusalem Bird Observatory (JBO), Jerusalem. Although January is usually our weakest month, with freezing winds when even the birds don't feel like getting up in the morning, we were surprised to see the summary of this month and realized that this was our best January in the 14 years since the JBO was established. Over 250 birds were trapped and ringed (banded) which is the equivalent to an average day in April…
- Gamla Nature Reserve, Golan. In the Gamla Reserve there were 28 Griffon Vulture (Gyps fulvus) nests at the beginning of the season. Now there are 25 active nests, each one with an egg. During the last survey we counted 75 Griffon Vultures. Other raptor news: Flying around the Gamla area are 2 Black Vultures (Aegypius monachus), 2 White-tailed Eagles (Haliaeetus albicilla) each with a transmitter. A Long-legged Buzzard (Buteo rufinus) and an Eagle Owl (Bubo bubo) are starting to build nests. There is an active Bonelli's Eagle (Hieraaetus fasciatus) nest with 2 eggs in it. An Egyptian Vulture (Neophron percnopterus) that was fitted with a transmitter at the Hai Bar Reserve on the Carmel has been spending the winter with us.
- Kibbutz Lotan Centre for Birdwatching. Winter is slowly coming to an end. All in all it is quite a mild winter so far. Besides single violent systems that made their way this far south in the country, the weather was calm and so was the bird watching. Although most target species were present and showed reasonably well, no major rarities were reported.
At Mitzpe Ramon small numbers of Syrian Serins were seen as well in January. Further south, on route 40, the Meishar area provided some good birds in the vast desert plains, up to 25 Spotted Sandgrouse (Pterocles senegallus), 10 Bar-tailed Larks (ammomanes cincturus) and a pair of Asian Desert Warblers (Sylvia nana) were seen during Dec-Feb. A single Hoopoe Lark (Alaemon alaudipes) was seen by Noam Wiess, Marcus Craig and myself, on different occasions. K76 received quite a bit of rainfall and the seasonal puddles and vegetation were frequented by good numbers of birds.
Yotvata's circular fields were one of the best sites this winter. Up to 5 Buff-bellied Pipits (Anthus japonicus) and 5 Oriental Skylarks (Alauda gulgula) were present on most visits with a supporting cast of several Hen Harriers (Circus cyaneus),single Marsh Harriers (Circus aeruginosus) and dozens of Water (Anthus spinoletta), and Red-throated Pipits (Anthus cervinus). Noam Wiess reported an Egyptian Nightjar (Caprimulgus aegyptius) in the fields, seen on the night of January 25th.
Volunteers are needed through all the country!

- Nette rousse (Netta ruffina): 1 femelle sur les réservoirs de Kfar Masarik, les 13-14/ janvier (S. Haham et al.).
- Harle piette (Mergellus albellus): une femelle/1er hiver sur le réservoir Nov reservoir, sud du Golan, 20-23 janvier (E. Banker et al.).
- Milan noir (Milvus migrans) : 23 750 (!) comptés dans sept dortoirs répartis dans le pays le 26 janvier (A. Ben-dov et al).
- Goéland cendré (Larus canus): 11 oiseaux de premier hiver, côte d'Acre, le 20 janvier (S. Haham); 4 sur les bassins de décantation d'Eliphaz, au sud de l'Arava, le 25 janvier (N. Weiss).
- Goéland marin (Larus marinus): un adulte toujours présent sur la côte d'Acre (S. Haham).
- Engoulevent du désert (Caprimulgus aegyptius): 1 dans les champs circulaires de Yotvata, le 25 janvier (N. Weiss).
- Alouette gulgule (Alauda gulgula): 5 dans les champs circulaires de Yotvata, le 23 janvier (N. Weiss et al.).
- Ammomane élégante (Ammomanes cincturus): jusqu'à 22 au Km 77, dans le sud de l'Arava (T. Kahn).
- Sirli du désert (Alaemon alaudipes): 1 au Meyshar, dans le sud du Negev, le 29 janvier (M. Craig).
- Pipit à dos olive Anthus hodgsoni): 1 dans la palmeraie d'Eilot, le 28 janvier (N. Weiss).
- Pipit farlousane (Anthus rubescens): jusqu'à cinq dans les champs circulaires de Yotvata, le 23 janvier (N. Weiss et al.); 1 dans la palmeraie d'Eilot, le 28 janvier (N. Weiss).
