Introduction
La Sterne voyageuse (Sterna bengalensis) est une espèce marine nichant sur les côtes et les îles des régions tropicales et subtropicales, principalement de la Mer Rouge à l’ouest de l’Océan Pacifique en passant par l’Océan Indien. Une population significative (3 400 oiseaux en 2010) appartenant à la sous-espèce T. b. emigrata se reproduit le long des côtes libyennes.
John J. Borg a été le conservateur du National Museum of Natural History de Malte et il est actuellement membre de Birdlife Malta. Il est particulièrement intéressé par les oiseaux marins nicheurs de Méditerranée et il étudie les populations de Puffins cendrés, Puffins yelkouan, Océanites tempête et Goélands leucophées de l’archipel maltais. Il a participé à plusieurs missions internationales de recensement des Sternes voyageuses en Libye.
Étant donné les troubles violents que connaît actuellement ce pays, nous l’avons interrogé sur la situation présente de cette espèce rare.
Abstract
The Lesser Crested Tern (Sterna bengalensis) is a seabird that breeds in subtropical and tropical coastal parts of the world, mainly from the Red Sea across the Indian Ocean to the western Pacific, and Australia, with a significant population on the Libyan coast.
John J. Borg is a member of BirdLife Malta fascinated by seabirds : he initiated a long-term study on the breeding biology and ecology of the three Procellariids breeding in the Maltese Islands and he
took part in an international team invited to Libya to study the Lesser Crested. He answered our questions about the current situation of this species in a country where fights have been occuring for a few months now.
